Uruguayan Seaweed Muffins are a very traditional and popular plate on the coast of this country.
Uruguayan seaweed dumplings – buñuelos de alga in Spanish – still made on the Cabo Polonio peninsula, an environmentally protected fishing village much explored by tourism for its rusticity and nature preservation – I’ll talk more about the region.

where to find the muffins
Nowadays, you can find this typical Uruguayan dish throughout the coast of the Rocha province (as if it were the Rocha state – understand the difference in nomenclature).
The first time I tried it was in Punta del Diablo, then I ate again in La Pedrera and saw it in many of the cities I passed before José Ignacio, close to the province end.
You can find it in everything, from street sellers on the beach to sophisticated restaurants.
What are Uruguayan seaweed muffins like?
The muffins are a delicious frying, a dough that looks a lot like the rice muffins, popular in some parts of Brazil – with flour, water or milk, eggs and some seasoning.
But as you can imagine, when rejecting rice you get fresh seaweed.
But seaweed, like Japanese food?
Some tourists I met there commented seeing the sellers of Uruguayan seaweed muffins picking up seaweed on the beach and I went to confirm it on the internet, it’s true, they use fresh washed seaweed, left to rest with vinegar and waiting to dry later in small strips, mix in the dough and pour into the hot oil.
In the recipes I have seen, it is better to catch the very green seaweeds that ain’t no longer stuck and are close to the beach.
In the end, it works out because these muffins are delicious, it makes me hungry when I remember.
