How did Brigadeiro come about?
According to the story, the brigadeiro appeared in the mid-40s, a time when it was very difficult to get milk and sugar. In this way, someone discovered that mixing condensed milk with chocolate would make a very good candy.

The political campaign
At the same time, elections for the president of Brazil took place, and one of the candidates for the presidency was called Brigadiro Eduardo Gomes.
Some women sold the candy as a campaign for Eduardo Gomes, to help with his election.
The chocolate dessert ended up being known as Brigadeiro docinho – little candy in English, and, over time, became popularly known as brigadeiro.
Electoral defeat
However, even with a good political campaign like this, Eduardo Gomes lost the elections to Eurico Gaspar Dutra.
How people made brigadeiro in the old days?
Some sites say the old recipe was made with milk, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate.
Over time the recipe has evolved and gotten better and better. Nowadays, you can tell it is more basic: chocolate or cocoa powder, butter and condensed milk, sometimes milk cream joins the recipe, making it more creamer.
